Milngavie Home Physiotherapy
Making progress with rehabilitation often requires more than an occasional physiotherapy appointment. Regular practice, encouragement and support can make a real difference.
Our Physio-Supported Home Rehabilitation service provides regular one-to-one rehabilitation sessions in your own home, following an individual treatment plan developed by your physiotherapist.
Sessions are delivered by an experienced Physiotherapy Assistant, with your progress overseen and regularly reviewed by a Chartered Physiotherapist.
Who is this service for?
Physio-Supported Home Rehabilitation may be particularly helpful for people who:
-
Are recovering following illness, injury, surgery or a hospital stay
-
Have reduced strength, balance or mobility
-
Lack confidence with walking or moving around at home
-
Have a neurological or long-term condition affecting their mobility
-
Have been given a rehabilitation or exercise programme but find it difficult to carry out independently
-
Need regular encouragement, supervision or reassurance with their rehabilitation
-
Would benefit from practising walking, transfers or other functional activities
-
Want to maintain their mobility, physical abilities and independence
-
Would benefit from regular rehabilitation but do not require a physiotherapist at every session
The service can also provide reassurance to family members who would like their relative to have regular professional support with their rehabilitation at home.
How does it work?
1. Initial Physiotherapy Assessment
Your rehabilitation begins with a comprehensive assessment by a Chartered Physiotherapist.
We will assess your mobility and physical abilities, discuss any difficulties you are experiencing and identify the activities that are most important to you.
Together, we will agree realistic rehabilitation goals and your physiotherapist will develop an individual treatment plan.
2. Regular Home Rehabilitation Sessions
Your Physiotherapy Assistant will then visit you at home, usually on a weekly basis, to work with you on the rehabilitation programme prescribed by your physiotherapist.
Every programme is individual, but your sessions may include:
-
Strengthening exercises
-
Balance rehabilitation
-
Walking and mobility practice
-
Practising transfers, such as getting in and out of a chair
-
Functional activities relevant to everyday life
-
Flexibility and movement exercises
-
Building confidence with movement
-
Practising your prescribed home exercise programme
-
Encouragement and support to help you stay consistent with your rehabilitation
Your Physiotherapy Assistant works closely with your physiotherapist and will provide feedback on your progress and raise any concerns or changes that may require physiotherapy input.
3. Regular Physiotherapy Reviews
Your physiotherapist will normally review your progress approximately every 6–8 weeks.
During your review, we will reassess your mobility and physical abilities, consider your progress towards your goals and adapt or progress your rehabilitation programme where appropriate.
If your needs change or your Physiotherapy Assistant has any concerns, a physiotherapy review can be arranged sooner.
An initial physiotherapy assessment is required before starting Physio-Supported Home Rehabilitation.
Ongoing physiotherapy reviews are charged separately at the usual physiotherapy rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who delivers the weekly rehabilitation sessions?
Your regular rehabilitation sessions are delivered by an experienced Physiotherapy Assistant working under the guidance of your physiotherapist.
Your physiotherapist remains responsible for your assessment, rehabilitation goals and treatment plan, and will review your progress regularly.
Is a Physiotherapy Assistant the same as a physiotherapist?
No. A Physiotherapy Assistant works alongside and under the direction of a physiotherapist.
Your Physiotherapy Assistant will help you carry out the rehabilitation programme prescribed by your physiotherapist. Clinical assessment, diagnosis and decisions about changing or progressing your treatment remain the responsibility of your physiotherapist.
Why wouldn't I just see a physiotherapist every week?
Some people need regular treatment from a physiotherapist. However, others benefit most from regular practice and support between physiotherapy reviews.
For these clients, Physio-Supported Home Rehabilitation provides consistent, one-to-one rehabilitation at home while keeping their programme under the supervision of a physiotherapist.
It can also provide a more affordable way to access regular rehabilitation support.
Do I need to be an existing patient?
No. New clients are very welcome.
You will first have a physiotherapy assessment to make sure the service is appropriate for you and to develop your individual rehabilitation plan.
How often will I have rehabilitation sessions?
Most clients have a weekly session, although the frequency can be discussed according to your individual needs and goals.
How often will I see the physiotherapist?
We normally recommend a physiotherapy review approximately every 6–8 weeks.
Reviews may be more or less frequent depending on your condition, progress and rehabilitation needs.
Can you help with walking and mobility as well as exercises?
Yes. Rehabilitation is about much more than completing an exercise programme.
Depending on your needs and treatment plan, sessions may include walking practice, balance work, transfers, strengthening, functional activities and building confidence with everyday movement.
Can a family member or carer be involved?
Absolutely. Family members and carers are very welcome to be involved, particularly if they are supporting your mobility or rehabilitation between sessions.
What happens if my condition changes?
Your Physiotherapy Assistant will communicate any concerns or significant changes to your physiotherapist.
If necessary, we can arrange an earlier physiotherapy review and adjust your rehabilitation plan.
